Free is so good

Very excited about a new website project I'm working on.  It's going to be a really simple site, which I hope gets bought by Google for gazillion dollars.  But dreaming aside, I'm really doing this project to up my interwebz skills (part of my new year's resolution - be more nerdy).

I've hit a milestone by installing Linux on my laptop.  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Apache 2.0, PHP5 and MySQL.  Its all sounding very geeky, but its really not. Its just programs with very techno savvy names.

But one thing I was very happy to discover was how much Linux and the open source community has grown over the past few years.  I've tried Linux back in 2003 and what a catastrophe that was!  CD drivers not working and crazy terminal commands to get things going.  I couldn't even get the interwebz going.

But after installing Ubuntu and playing with it a few days, I'm convinced my next (non-gaming) computer will run Linux.  It's got alternatives to Microsoft Office and Photoshop plus all the Web Server applications which would easily total over $2000+ on a Windows system, but available all for free with Linux. Its really quite amazing.

This is probably going to keep me busy but I'll try and blog when I can.  And I'll try not not blog so much the geeky stuff.  I'll probably start a different blog for that.

Dreamy Donuts and Little Caesars

Anh and I discovered more ways to get fat last Friday.

Dreamy Donuts

So glad Anh was told about this place.  These are my new favorite donuts now.  They are nice and fluffy and have quite a variety available.

I like these more than Krispy Kremes because they're not too sweet.  Dreamy Donuts are still sweet, but they don't make my teeth ache with sweetness like KK donuts do.

Plus their boxes have handles.

Little Caesars

When Anh and I visited Litlle Caesars in Mundaring we were blown away by their dessert pizza.  So our expectations were quite high when we checked out their new store in Leederville.

The shop was absolutely packed last friday!  People were lining outside to get seats.  We didn't want to wait so we ordered take away (and also took home the pizza shop smell in our clothes).

The Roman Empire

Jane's Addiction

The pizzas were only so-so dough (get it?).

Maybe it was the italian sausage and the prosciutto but we found the pizzas a bit too salty.   I mean, they tasted okay, but nothing mind blowing.  Nothing so different to other gourmet pizza stores.  Perhaps its just their dessert pizza's that are good.

The Caesar salad that walked past us looked good dough (get it?)

E-Bridal and the Wedding

Wedding overload last Saturday.

Spent the first half of the morning checking out the eBridal wedding expo.

As you'd imagine, the $15 event packs the Burswood function area with pretty much every wedding-related item you can think off.

Photographers, invitations, cake-makers, venues, dresses, limo hire.  They even had this guy who will MC + DJ and sing on your wedding! It's the wedding singer! And he actually sounded pretty good. Very Frank Sinatra.  Too bad his music choice were too old for us.

It was a good experience, but one that I wouldn't want to do again lolz.

Not that it was bad or anything. They did give free popcorn and mini-cake samples.  Plus we probably saved lots from the deals and discount vouchers we picked up.

It just that it had this unpleasant feeling of having too many bride-to-be in one building  :P

With the brides were moms, sisters, friends, bridesmaids, cousins - whoever.  It was like a giant bridal-Tupperware-oestrogen party *shudder*

And its really unfair because is geared towards women with heaps of stands with 'Hen's Night' stuff.  Where's the stand with Buck's night memorabilia huh? Where's the pole dancers?  :P

Man-stuff - Hummer Limo

After the expo we headed to the Perth Cathedral for Joe and Michell's wedding.

The newly upgraded Cathedral looks fantastic!  It's both modern and traditional at the same time.  Inside is really bright and fresh and a huge improvement from the previously dark church.

The altar has a new greeny-bluey glowing background

The reception was then held in the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. I really liked this place and  I'd have my wedding here if I had the choice :)

Chopsticks with Knife & Fork! Brilliant!

The celebration was really enjoyable.  The food was excellent, the company was great and we had a great night.

Was sooooooo tired at the end of the night though!

All wedded out as well.

Cascading Style

For the past few days, I've been (and still is) obsessed with CSS.

Cascading Style Sheets.

For those not in the know....  probably best to keep it that way.  :)

CSS is very geeky nerdy stuff.  Kinda like getting obsessed with the Formatting Toolbar in Microsoft Word.

For some bizarre reason I've spent the last three days reading up and playing around with Microsoft Web Developer 2008 Express.  I'm talking about hours on end reading about it, trying tutorials and checking forums.  This obsession would match any porn or gaming obsession.

Im even reading about this stuff at work (shhhh don't tell the boss)!

Anyways, time spent here blogging is time I'm not spending on CSS! Back to CSS quick!
