Perth Supafest 2011

Went to my first music festival a few weeks ago!

Supafest showcased some of my favourite RnB singers like Nelly, Taio Cruz and Timbaland.  Other artists who made an appearance include Snoop Dog, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Fat Joe and T-Pain.

Too bad Timbaland pulled out the last minute, but it was still very enjoyable.  Can't beat a day with friends and good music!

The festival started around midday and we didn't leave until around ten at night.  It was a pretty full-on day with lots of dancing, drinking and merriment.

Speaking of drinking - the low point of the day was when a teenage girl decided that she's had too much to drink and threw up on my back!!

SOOOO GROSS!!

It was all warm and chunky.  Smelt awful.  I had to throw away my shirt because it was disgusting after that.  Thankfully Ryan had an extra shirt which he lent me, but was not too happy about the end of Mr Happy.

Still, I got to see Taio Cruz which was the highlight for me.

He's such a nice guy, very polite for a playa. :)

Music Trippin

Really enjoying my time in the gym lately.

But not for the actual work-out.

Or the smelly, sweaty equipment.

Or the occasional hairy ass-cracks that I unintentionally see. :P

But, I'm liking the putting on of my headphones and just getting lost in the music.

When music tripping I'm imagining the MTV for the songs and its really cool because I'm thinking these little movies in my head. Like I was listening to Marie Digby's - Miss Invisible. I'm thinking this sepia letterboxed scene with a girl wearing a black coat just sitting under the bleachers. Her hair all ruffled and she's all shy and quiet. Then the scene turns full colour when the song comes to its happy end. You'll have to listen to the song to understand what I'm talking about but yeah, you get my drift with the movies in my head.

[Sidenote - did you see what Kanye West did to Taylor Swift on the MTV VMA? Hahaha Katy Pery says "It's like you stepped on a kitten" Hahaha]

Now because I have the music on shuffle I'm getting all sorts of genres popping up in my head. The problem is when listening to sexy RnB songs.

Unfortunately they don't leave much for the imagination. Like Trey Songz's "I Invented Sex" or Bobby Valentino's "Butterfly Tattoo" . Suddenly I'm picturing hot women with butterfly tattoos doin' the nasty?!

Hmmm.

Thankfully there's always hairy old men around to counter with unsexy thoughts. :P

Speaking of RnB I revealed to my girlfriend lately that I have a man crush on Ne-yo.

Just look at them phat lips

Hahaha.

But no, I don't want to kiss his lips. I just admire his talent. He sings awesome and has dance moves to boot.

Plus I like his style.

Plus he pulls very sexy-sexy women.

I'm thinking of getting a Ne-yo hat very soon..... saw them in Roger David. Maybe it might give me pullin' powers.

But I'm especially digging his unreleased song "If You Want Me to Stay". Man, this song is just da bomb! If you have a sound system with some decent bass - you gotta crank this sh!t up! The intro gets me all the time and I love the beeps during the pre-chorus. Great melody, great song (made up for not doing the Aussie tour!).

But one musician I have a real crush on is Colbie Callait!

Wasn't a big fan of her bubbly song, but after listening to her Breakthrough album, fell for her voice! She sings so well and clearly (I listen to her before I sleep and pretend she's singing to me).

Now her songs might be cheesy, but that's how I like 'em. :)

And have you seen her video for Fallin For You? From this, it looks like I still have a chance.

Maybe after I get the Ne-yo hat.

Music is magic

I dunno about everybody else, but I've been seeing a lot of police and ambulance incidents lately. Like last Saturday, I saw three separate incidents of people pulled over by cops. And then on Monday, what a corker! In the parking lot, someone got hurt or something 'cos they barricaded a section with police line. And then on the way home, police and ambulance were in Roe street where I saw a really disturbing incident where a guy was lying on the road with his head underneath the driver side of a car! No brains or blood anywhere, but I still can't imagine how he got there in the first place. There was also an ambulance incident in City West just a few hundred metres from under-the-car guy. Then last night, on the Mitchell, HUGE traffic accident. Saw a

smashed up Honda civic.

Crazy stuff. Better take care on the roads.

Anyways, enough of that.

What I wanted to write about was the event I went to last night. I didn't catch the name of the event, but its pretty much a state school musical event with lots of performances from the many different public primary schools in Western Australia.

If you're thinking choirs, glee clubs, home made costumes, you'd be thinking right.

In all honesty, I wasn't too excited about going. This was a very parent-child "I'm-so-proud-of-you-even-though-I'm-sick-to-death-of-hearing-you-play-the-recorder" sort of event.

Now I wouldn't say the performances where super fantastic. There was a 10 year old girl, who sang so professionally Broadway. She was really good. And the school choirs were as you'd expect a group of children singing in harmony would sound like.

But there were some terrible stuff. Songs played half the pace, some played twice the speed. One group got the timing all messed up and ended sounding like a fruit salad of instrumental noise. And ohhhh the violins!! *shudders*.

During the intermission, I saw parents run to the bar for remedy.

And then there was a young woman singing 'Unfaithful' by Rhianna. Good singer, but *GREAT* song choice. That's the kind of song you want kids in the audience aspiring to. Might as well get started early right?

But in the end, I still had a great time.

Year 1 student in bear uniforms? Too cute!

It was just nice seeing the kids work together and make good music.

In one of the numbers, there's a little boy playing the triangle. He might think his role was pretty minor, but from where I was sitting, I think he made their choir song sound complete.

Very inspirational. The event made me realise how great music *is* once again.

'Cos I've been listening to a lot of commercial radio lately and I think that's been clouding my head. They keep on playing songs they've been paid to play. I mean, how much Bom Bom Pow can one take? I've been missing songs with good lyrics and good melody.

So to get back the music, I'm gonna try to listen to a different radio station every day. Learn a song on my guitar and wipe clean the mp3 player! Time to load up on new tunes. I need old albums and new albums. There's so much good music out there and I can't believe I almost stopped looking for them.

Oh, plus more karaoke sessions.

Rest in peace Michael

I woke up to news today of Michael Jackson's death.

For a while I sat in bed blankly staring at the wall.

I'm shocked and saddened. Someone who's influenced me and so many fans with his good will and music is now gone.

Throughout my growing years, his songs were the soundtrack of so many little chapters.

The earliest I can remember was when I was eight. Before I went to sleep, I would listen to his cassette using my moms portable radio with orange headphones. Smooth criminal. I would play this song over and over again (I didn't know who Annie was or what the song was really about. I must have just really enjoyed the melody and rhythm of it all. Plus the alternative was the Phil Collins tape).

My first year in Australia was marked with MJ's song Black or White. My cousins and I even did a dance routine to it.

Fan highlight would be going to the HIStory concert.

What a show that was. It was everything I'd expect from a king.

And then some.

Even with all the weirdness that happened later in his life, there is no denying how great a humanitarian and performer he was.

Thank you for all that you have given us.

1) A better way to power up electronic gizmos - I have a separate electrical adaptor for my toothbrush, mp3 player, my shaver, my mobile, my DS, my camera. Why do I need to carry so many different cable thingymajiggies when I'm traveling? Yeah, I know I don't need an electric toothbrush, but how else am I going to keep my grillz clean?


2) A high-school teeny boppy show - when I turn on the TV there's only shows like Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty. Young people don't want to idolise pruning 30-something dinosaurs. We need 16 year old leads living the life like Britney and Paris. How else are kids to learn about promiscuity, backstabbing and the finer things in life? Somebody think of the kids and bring out a new high-school teeny boppy show.


3) A decent male RnB artist. Someone like Brian McKnights or R Kelly (before he went peado). Or even a group! Where's the Boys 2 Men of the 2000's? Where are the decent ballads? We really need to stop the tidal wave of stupid stupid stupid stupid songs.


4) Some decent heart-clogging fast food. Free of this 'fat free - healthy choice' nonsense. People rally about freedom of speech and freedom of choice all the time. People want their rights to eat very unhealthy fast food! The cows and chickens have died for us - least we can do is eat their fat and skins to honor their sacrifice.


5) Interactive clothes. Like hypercolour tshirts. I'm sure we can stich flashing LEDs to t-shirts by now. We need some really cheesy clothes so that our aunties have something to give us on our birthdays.


6) Another party dance - like the YMCA, Chicken dance and Macarena. No, not the Soulja boy dance, thats too ghetto. We need something the whole family can enjoy. What are we going to dance in weddings then?

YouTube's got acoustic talent

A few months ago I was surfing around YouTube looking for the Britney Spears video to add to a blog post. I stumbled upon a couple of guys singing Gimme More acoustic version. I was impressed!

That got me thinking - surely there are other people singing acoustic versions of popular songs. Maybe they sound just as good?

Hahaha. This video is crazy as well. Im pretty sure the singer is pinay (heheh pinoy hotness & talent!!). This one is a phully sick duet.

There's so much talent out there in YouTube land. It makes me wonder what some of the record companies are thinking when they sign up some weirdos. It must make judging shows like idol or XFactor really hard.

This here is a nice rendition of Leona Lewis's song.

These guys have an album already, but I still want unfamiliar talent on my post :)

But my biggest find was this girl.

She can sing and it doesn't hurt that she's very pretty too! Marie Digby (who's half Irish - half Japanese) was almost a nobody a few months ago. Now she's attracted the attention of record labels. Her new single is being played on the radios now.

*sigh*

If I only had a camera, I could be on YouTube too.

Justin Timberlake fever.

Mr Timberlake just finished touring the country on his Future Sex Love Show.

And 'damn girl'. This guy was just too awesome!

Justin played the piano.

Justin played the guitar.

Justin turned his groove on.

Anne reckons he looked hot even when drinking water!

I guess if I were a girl ('if' is the key operative word), I'd join the army of hot and bothered girls screaming their heads off for Justin. He was pretty awesome.

There were plenty of them hot and bothered girls in the concert.

There were maybe a handful of guys but I'm pretty sure they weren't 100% concentrating on Justin.

Hehehe.

But yeah, Justin would understand. He's pretty casual, cool and laid back.

He even drank tequilla (tokillya') to toast Perth. This was his first time in Perth, second time in Magpie land.

But yeah, great show Mr Timberlake. I knew I bought your jeans for a reason.
